Renaissance

Renaissance Choir Belfast

Welcome to the Renaissance website

Renaissance is a small chamber choir of around 20 voices, based in east Belfast. It has a broad age range and a relaxed, friendly atmosphere.

Renaissance Belfast

What sort of music do we sing and where?

We perform in a range of venues, both sacred and secular, and our repertoire includes church music, madrigals, folk songs and part songs from composers spanning the centuries.

Renaissance also has a wide secular repertoire and we continue to expand its lighter repertoire with performances of modern jazz standards and classic pop songs.

Interested in joining us?

We are always happy to meet with potential new members who have experience in sight reading.

We meet on regular Monday evenings in Belfast. We have two-week breaks for Christmas and Easter and a summer break during July and August.

About the Conductor

Ian Mills graduated with first-class honours from Queen's University Belfast, studying organ and harpsichord with Charles Harrison and Professor Jan Smaczny. After completing a Master of Arts degree in Music in 2006, Ian was appointed Organist and Master of the Choristers at St Columb’s Cathedral, Londonderry—the UK’s youngest Cathedral organist. The following year, he was appointed director of the renowned Belfast-based chamber choir Renaissance. Since then, Renaissance has performed regularly in Belfast and in Derry/Londonderry, having expanded its repertoire under Ian's enthusiastic guidance.

Highlights

Renaissance has featured in many Ulster Orchestra, Ulster Brass Ensemble and Studio Symphony peformances over the years, frequently appearing on TV and radio.

We showed our flexibility by performing with the Chieftains in the Waterfront Hall, Belfast, by 'backing' Marianne Faithful in an appearance at the Belfast Festival and shared a platform with Van Morrison at the City Hall during President Bill Clinton's first visit to Belfast.

Renaissance sang with the Vienna Boys' Choir at Armagh Cathedral, and gave N Ireland's first ever performance of John Rutter's 'Gloria' at the opening of the BBC's Blackstaff Studios in central Belfast.

We are just as happy to sing at weddings, celebrations and Christmas gatherings. Contact us with your requirements, and we'll do our best to accommodate.
